March 2017 Scribe of the Month

Posted by Jill Russell on Apr 12, 2017 9:51:57 AM
we're proud of our scribe of the month winners!

HR_SOTM_Logo.pngOur scribes work tirelessly day and night serving the best doctors practicing medicine. We believe every single one of them is amazing, but every once in a while there are a handful of scribes who go above and beyond. The PhysAssist Scribe of the Month (SOTM) program was developed to recognize a few stellar individuals each month who embody the essence of what it means to be a scribe. We view these attributes as sincere, caring, responsive, innovative, balanced and efficient.

How it Works
Every month, outstanding scribes are nominated for a Scribe Spotlight by members of their team or fellow scribes. We've pored over all of this month's nominees and are proud to announce those selected to be Scribe of the Month for March 2017 in each region that we service across the country.

Ryan Flynn Northeast.pngRYAN FLYNN  POUGHKEEPSIE, NY

"Every scribe works hard to do their best work in what can be very long days/nights in the ED. To be recognized out of a group of equally deserving people is special."

Reason for Nomination
"Ryan Flynn is a dedicated scribe who is always available for shift coverage and is a valued trainer on our team. About 2 weeks ago, we had a situation in which a scribe did not show up and even after working a busy 12 hour training shift himself, Ryan stepped in and stayed late to work with our physician. He takes training to the next level and has great relationships with all of our physicians.

Why did you choose to become a scribe?
I spent several years working in EMS and experienced medicine in a prehospital setting. I wanted to become a scribe to see how medicine works once patients reached the hospital as well as grow my network and knowledge.

What are your future career aspirations?
I am currently pursuing DO school and would like to specialize in either emergency medicine or radiology.

Marian Mathis- Mid Atlantic.jpgMARIAN MATHIS – BEAUFORT, SC

"Honored and humbled [to be named Scribe of the Month]."

Reason for Nomination:
"Marian is one of the most personable people I have met. She has a number of great personal relationships where she is on a first-name basis with everyone from the Medical Director to the janitors working at night. She was a CTS and one of the trainers that was responsible for teaching me how to scribe - for professionally introducing me to medicine (giving me the tour on my first day when I showed up early, even though she didn't have to). She continues to serve in that role. With her previous MediTech experience and great personality, she has been able to integrate both the personal and professional attributes of her character that have truly set the foundation for our program (which is horribly important for a program that is just beginning). She consistently reminds everyone of all these attributes needed to be a well-rounded and effective scribe.

Upon my vacation and when I had the death of a loved one in the family, she stepped in as the acting-Chief. Marian has also created a team-building activity we had on Valentine's Day called 'Scribes Love the ED', where the week of Valentine's Day, members of our team got together and made some cupcakes and cookies with a heart-shaped banner that had medical valentine's puns on it. We took the food and materials we had made and brought them to the facility the next day and set our little party up. It was a great team-building activity for us, and it really helped everyone (scribes, nurses, PAs, MDs) working on Valentine's Day to remember that it was a day we should celebrate. She does things like that all the time. After considering the workload she has, as well as what she does for a program on a daily basis, it is easy to tell that our long-term success has been - and continues to be - very much based on Marian Mathis. It has been a pleasure working with her, learning from her and building a friendship with her. She is undoubtedly deserving of this recognition."

Who inspires you?
I'm definitely inspired by my coworkers and physicians around me. They all come from different backgrounds, yet are all so hardworking, focused, and do their job for all the right reasons.

What is the best part of working on your team?
Everyone is so welcoming and kind to each other. When we finally get to work together it's like a mini reunion and celebration.

Central - Mariah Maher.pngMARIAH MAHER – BEMIDJI, MN

"I honestly never would have expected it [winning SOTM] and would love to know who nominated me! But it does feel very good that someone recognizes me from afar and I hope to return the favor."

Reason for nomination:
"Mariah is being nominated for the outstanding work she performs. While at work, she goes above and beyond in every task and is constantly working to better herself at her position! She is interactive with the entire ED staff and lends a helpful hand to all scribes with training. She maintains her position here while also going to school full time and doing research. My second shift many months ago, I worked with Mariah and I was blown away by her passion and motivation."

What are your future career aspirations?
As of right now, the plan is to take a year off after graduating this May to take time to study for the MCAT and save up some money! If med school doesn't work out, I will apply for PA school or possibly go into forensic science.

Who inspires you?
I am inspired by anyone that works hard under whatever circumstances they're in and keeps a good attitude. I am talking about at work, school, and in life in general.

Phuoc Nguyen - Texas Group.jpgPHUOC NGUYEN – HOUSTON, TX

"I am very appreciative of our team knowing that hard work doesn't go unnoticed. There are also many other scribes on the team who are equally deserving and I am proud to be recognized."

Reason for Nomination:
"Phuoc is the most polite, professional, and courteous scribe we have on our team. Phuoc will work shifts back to back if it means that another co-worker will get the help that they need. He goes out of his way to work around his other commitments if a fellow scribe needs coverage. He works hard while he is on shift and maintains a friendly environment. He is a great asset to our team and knowing that he is so dedicated to his role of a scribe really makes him stand out above all!"

Why did you choose to become a scribe?
I wanted to immerse myself and expand my understanding of patients and the physicians who provide care on a daily basis. Working in the ED has been a rewarding interpersonal experience and an eye-opener to the field of medicine that goes well beyond shadowing.

Who inspires you?
The medical staff, fellow scribes, and most importantly my mother, who is the most hardworking person I know. She gives 110% effort in everything she strives to accomplish and does not merely treat her objectives as a goal, but a way of life.

Jalesa Adams - Southeast_Photo.pngJALESA ADAMS – PEMBROKE PINES, FL

"Blessed to have been given such an honor."

Reason for Nomination:
"Jalesa is an awesome scribe as she is always willing to help out. She has helped me out on multiple times with shift trades and picking up shifts. In addition, she has helped me improve my charting to be similar to her great charts. She is always receptive to any questions.

Jalesa is a super friendly and interactive scribe who is always willing to help. She always trades shifts and responds in a timely manner. Jalesa is truly a special scribe."

What are your future career aspirations?
I want to become a Pediatrician.

Do you have a hidden talent?
I have been playing the saxophone for over 10 years.

Chantelle Martinez West Group.jpgCHANTELLE MARTINEZ – LAS VEGAS, NV

"I feel so honored and surprised to have been selected as Scribe of the Month. There are so many really amazing scribes in the company and I am grateful to be associated with such prestige."

Reason for Nomination:
"I'm nominating Chantelle Martinez, our HCA Chief Scribe, due to her continued amazing service to our team! Chantelle has been there since day one and has always been available for any questions or concerns. I can always reach her via cell or text and she has this superhuman power of being available 24/7. As a scribe, Chantelle knows first-hand how hard we work and is always appreciative of coverage! She deserves recognition for doing the job few would want with nothing short of a kind spirit."

Why did you choose to become a scribe?
I heard about the scribe position from several of my classmates and was interested because of all of the excitement in their stories about the nature of being in the ED. The fact that they were shadowing and networking and making money all at the same time was more than enough to convince me to apply.

If you weren't going into Medicine, what else would you be interested in?
My love for love has instilled a deep appreciation and fascination for wedding planning, haha. I think that could also have been so fun to help pick yummy cakes and find beautiful locations and bring families together to help make new families.
